General Questions
What do you need from me?
An open mind, uninterrupted time to work together and the desire to maintain the systems we help you set up. By working together to organise your space or your life admin, we'll create a system that specifically meets your needs. This will also help you keep on top of things, since it will fit in with your daily routines and habits. We can work out a manageable plan for anything you are concerned about that we feel confident you can accomplish without our help.
How long does it take?
There is such a huge range of projects that we can undertake that it is impossible to suggest a timescale but as we discuss together the scope of the project, it will become clearer.
Do you work with people in receipt of direct payments?
Increasingly, we work with clients with specific disabilities and special needs who are in receipt of Direct Payments or other benefits. Our input into the organisation of their homes and the maintenance of that has proven really helpful and has regularly been a service recognised as a legitimate expense by Social Services and Charities.
What if I need help again in the future?
We are just a phone call away; we understand that life changes and can present new challenges, including new types of disorganisation (and we love seeing our clients again!)
Are you affiliated to any organisation?
Lesley has been a member of APDO (Association of Professional Declutterers and Organisers) for over 13 years now and was delighted to be asked to join their Board in 2012. During her 7 years on the APDO Board, she helped develop and deliver training to over 400 UK Professional Organisers and provided one to one mentoring for over 100.
What types of people hire a professional organiser?
Men, women, people working full time or part time, people with a disability, stay at home parents, retirees; there is no one type of person who is disorganised. It can happen to any of us. Quite often it is a significant life change that prompts a call. Moving home, having a baby, divorce, downsizing, losing a parent - these are all things that can leave us overwhelmed by our home. Working with a professional organiser is good for anyone who needs to regain a semblance of order in their busy life. If you just don't have the time or you can't get it scheduled, having someone to come in and help you with it means you'll get it done.
What will happen to anything I no longer need?
Any items that you choose to get rid of will be recycled wherever possible using local charity shops and your local recycling centre etc. If you wish to sell items, we can help you to find a reseller as part of our service. We are not able to take stuff to the tip for you due to Waste Carrier legislation but can take anything to the Charity Shop and will assist you to dispose of things on the day we declutter them.
My friend/relative needs your service. Can you help them?
If you call on behalf of someone else, we will just have a phone call with you first and then your relative or friend to make sure they are fully on board with the idea of us helping.
We also offer gift vouchers printed or by email if you wish to give a gift.
I can't afford your service at the moment, are there any other options?
Yes, absolutely. Lesley runs an online service too called The Declutter Hub where you can have a year's online support, a step by step Roadmap, live Q&A sessions with Lesley and her partner Ingrid for around the same price as a one to one session. They also have a free weekly podcast relating to all things clutter and organisation. Take a look and do let us know if you have any queries.
How do you ensure confidentiality?
Life ADDmin is a completely private and confidential service. There are no advertising logos on cars or uniforms and we will never discuss clients with a third party unless agreed. Occasionally, we will ask if we can take before and after photographs but this is entirely your choice.
Paperwork
I find paperwork so draining and stressful. Can you help me with that?
Definitely - we love paperwork and have tried and tested ways of keeping the project moving forwards and making it much less daunting. It's amazing what a difference it makes to have someone right next to you.
What kind of paperwork can you help me with?
We can help with any kind of paperwork, the key to success with these projects is getting to know you as a client to understand what systems will work best for you and what kind of paperwork you encounter on a day-to-day basis.
Can you tell me what paperwork I should keep/shred?
We can give some guidance but certain types of paperwork, for example, those relating to your tax returns you may wish to seek specialist guidance on how long certain items should be kept for. The key benefit to decluttering and organising your paperwork with us is that we will help to reduce the overall volumes and set you up with systems that will ensure you paperwork does not get out of control again.
Can you help me to remove the unwanted paperwork from my home?
We do not offer a waste removal/recycling service and we cannot remove paperwork that is confidential. We can however help to organise outside services that can facilitate the removal/confidential destruction of these items for you.
How long will it take to sort through my paperwork?
There are so many things that have a bearing on how long a project like this will take - the speed at which you can make decisions, the type of paperwork, what kind of order the paperwork is in now. But once we start working together, timescales will be come clearer.
Virtual Organising
What equipment do I need for a virtual organising session?
All you need is a telephone, but a laptop/tablet and a good quality internet connection would be ideal.
What sort of projects can you undertake via virtual organising?
We can tackle almost any project that we could normally do face-to-face, but the ideal projects would be things like electronic organising (emails, electronic files, etc.) Please call us to discuss your requirements and then we can determine if virtual organising would work for you.
How long are the sessions?
The minimum session time is 30 minutes, but we can schedule in as many hours as you feel you need (up to a maximum of 5 hours).
Life Admin / Organisation
What kind of admin or home organisation can you help me with?
We can help you with anything from paperwork organising, meal planning, creating chore rotas and everything in between. If there are tasks on your ‘to-do-list’ that you are not getting to then we can either help to get them ticked off, or help to build an organisational system for you to make those daily tasks easier to stay on top of.
How long does it take to assist with these tasks?
The length of time it takes will vary significantly from client to client. Give us a call and we can chat through your requirements and how we can help.
Can you help me on an ongoing basis?
We do have some clients that we assist with regular weekly/monthly tasks on a rolling basis. Our aim is to help you organise your home and daily life in such a way that most of the tasks are easier for you to manage. However, we are always happy to see our clients so if you feel you would benefit from regular sessions then please just ask.
Support with ADHD
Do I need to have been diagnosed with ADHD for you to be able to help me?
Not at all. Many of our clients suspect they have ADHD but don't have or want a diagnosis. Regardless of where you are in your ADHD journey, we can help you put in place strategies to ensure you feel more in control.
Do you have any specific training in ADHD?
All our organisers have specific personal experience of neurodiversity - either with clients or family members. We are constantly undertaking professional development via various training programmes, talks and workshops. Whilst training is vital and enlightening, our main learning will always be from our clients. There's nothing as powerful than learning directly from the neurodiverse clients we work with. Each and every person we work with allows us to build up a range of strategies to explore.
How long are your sessions? I struggle to remain focused on specific tasks and get distracted or overwhelmed easily.
Our minimum session length is 3 hours and typically we will do no more than 5 hours together. Our sessions are tailored to your needs and we will take breaks as and when you need them or we feel distraction, overwhelm or hyperfocus is impacting your progress.
Do you ever work on a weekly basis with clients.
Yes we have some clients we see on a very regular basis, but equally we can do one-off sessions too.
Do you give advice about ADHD appropriate tools to use?
Yes, during our session we will identify tools and resources we have found useful in the past or we can research new things to help after our session too.
Do you help people with neurodivergencies other than ADHD?
Yes, we have worked with clients with ASD, OCD, Dyspraxia, Discalculia. Every client is different and our strategies are tailored to your needs and your life. Whilst we have expert knowledge of strategies that can generally help, no two neurodiverse people have the same needs.
I often forget about appointments and either miss them or double book myself. Can you remind me?
Yes, we will ensure we send appropriate reminders to you in a format and timescale that will work for you.
Do your team have ADHD?
No-one within the team has a diagnosis of ADHD but a combination of living with family members and working with clients has given us the insight and knowledge to provide tried and tested strategies.
Remote Assistant Support
Are you the best people to help me with these tasks?
There are experts out there for most things you need in life but often you choose not to utilise them for many reasons. We are almost like your own personal assistant - there to do the things you just don't have time or knowledge for but want to keep in house. If we know you would be better using someone else either from a cost or quality perspective, we will let you know.
How do you know where to find people from ?
As part of our Life Admin service, we will do the necessary due diligence to find suitable alternative services to meet your needs. We will determine the parameters for your needs and research/call/check reviews for any alternative services we find.
When you find contacts for me, is the contract with you or the service provider?
The contract for any work will be with the service provider.
How will we communicate on tasks?
Depending on your preferences, we can do catch up phone calls, Zoom, use a digital task manager or email. We will discuss that with you prior to the project starting. We will work within an infrastructure that suits you.
Digital Decluttering
I have literally thousand of emails - how can you sort though those?
You'd be surprised just how quickly we can start to make a difference once you start to identify junk and delete in bulk.
Should I not be able to do this myself?
You can do it yourself, but when learning any new skill, everyone benefits from time spent with a professional. It makes the job easier, faster and more efficient. And, because the time is scheduled in your diary, there's less chance that it will slide to the bottom of your priorities. We will also spend time teaching you the tips and tricks so you can carry on without us once we are gone. But we are always here to help should you need us in the future.
Will I be getting value for money?
Digital decluttering can take time but when working with clients we have found:
- Sorting your digital clutter out means stress goes down and productivity increases hugely
- The time saved looking for things you have lost is significant
- The joy that comes form having all your photos easy to access is special.
- Having only one password to remember rather than hundreds lessens anxiety.
- Setting up a digital calendar means you don't miss out on the important things in life.
Ultimately, the benefits of being organised, feeling less stressed and being in control of your digital world again is priceless. Many of our clients find that having their home more organised means that other aspects of their life are enhanced and they can move forward with their long terms plans once their technology is no longer holding them back.
How does it work?
Following a phone conversation to discuss your needs we can arrange an appointment to understand the digital projects you want to work on. Then we will work on a project plan to get started. All projects evolve and we will evaluate progress and discuss any necessary changes as we work.
How long does it take?
There is no set time on how long a particular project will take. It all depends on how much needs to be done and also how quickly you can make a decision. We will keep you focused on the task in hand and help you to prioritise. Together, we can make huge progress in a day.
Can you work with my systems?
We will match you with someone on our team who is familiar with your system (or can learn it quickly).
