Neurodiverse Clients

Neurodiversity is increasingly on people's radars. Whilst many of our clients have had suspicions of their neurodiversity, diagnoses are on the rise and so is people's understanding and awareness of themselves and those around them. Many of us are feeling validated and have an explanation for something which, for so many years, has been misunderstood. ADHD, OCD, ASD, dyscalculia, dyslexia and dyspraxia are some of the more common disorders that we encounter and as self-awareness increases, people are reaching out to us to help alleviate their longstanding issues with organisation and administration.

How can you help with neurodiversity?

As always, we will be led by you. You know best how you are impacted on a day-to-day basis and where your frustrations are when it comes to the organisation in your home and your day to day life. Because we have worked with neurodivergent conditions many times, we alter the way we typically work to facilitate a positive and enjoyable process as well as a suitable outcome. That can be logistical - changes to session lengths and breaks. It can be emotional - increased attention to sensory, anxiety and overwhelm. And, where appropriate, we can guide you to stay on task and achieve your goals.

The Problem

Ian was a small business owner working from home in a creative industry. He had recently been diagnosed with ADHD.

He told us he had tried to keep his office tidy so many times over the years but no sooner had he tidied it than it was messy again. He had a lot of technical equipment which was all in a jumble and he was struggling to keep control. As he live-streamed and hosted a live podcast regularly, his office space was on camera and it was important for him to be able to highlight the fun things in his life in the backdrop.

The Solution

Bev chatted to Ian about what was most frustrating to him and they laid out a plan which would evolve over three or four sessions. And they got stuck in to cables and papers galore

  • Ian had a 'box of doom' with technical bits and bobs he had collected over the years and other items stored in the loft. The first priority was to work out what equipment they were working with.
  • Bev identified a shopping list of storage and organisational items that would be helpful including an IKEA Kallax, a pinboard and a few other ADHD friendly products.
  • Once storage was in place, they decluttered things that were obsolete, sorted like with like and created categories that made logical sense to Ian.
  • The label maker came out and got a lot of use.  It's vital for people living with ADHD to have clear visibility on things.
  • The pinboard went up with an analogue clock to easily see the passage of time. The pinboard also housed his most used stationery tems.
  • Cable management came next to create an aesthetic environment that was calmer and less chaotic.
  • A digital database of all technology items was created in a cloud app.
  • And then a carefully curated collection of items went on top of the Kallax to create an interesting backdrop for Ian's livestreaming.

Ian couldn't have been more delighted and now finds himself less stressed, happier at work and way more productive.

Both neurodiverse and neurotypical clients are all so different - their home is different. Their stuff is different. Their priorities and lifestyle are different. There is no one size fits all here. Our job is to listen to you, to be guided by you and to work out what makes you tick. Only then can we create solutions and systems that are the solid foundation you need to enjoy and excel in life.
